FCPC students join faculty in international research conference

Three students from First City Providential College were among the selected 10 participants that represented the school in the 26th World Conference on Applied Science Engineering and Technology (WCASET) that transpired at St. Giles Hotel, Makati on February 27, 2020.

Two students from BA Communication; Jennallyssa Marie Eligino and Patrick Villanueva and one student from BS Hotel Management; Marielle Elumba presented their research on the said conference.

Jennallyssa Eligino talked about her research on Artificial Intelligence with the title “The Role of Artificial Intelligence in the Improvement of Human Interpersonal Communication”.

She felt honored that her research was chosen to be submitted in the event.

“Syempre, natuwa ako kasi napili ng school 'yung research ko para i-present. Kahit sino naman 'di ba? 'Di lang kasi 'yun basta bastang conference. May international audience eh.” Jennallyssa said.

“Nakakakaba in a good way. The feeling na i-ppresent mo 'yung research mo sa ganung klaseng conference, para ka nang nanalo. Big opportunity ang WCASET for all the presenters kasi nabigyan kami ng chance i-share 'yung pinaghirapan naming study sa ibang participants din. When I presented, nagkaroon ng technical problem, pero still I'm glad kasi natapos ko siya.” she added.

Her most memorable moment from the conference was school’s Vice President Echel Simon-Antero’s keynote speech about artificial intelligence.

“When Ma'am Echel shared her research in the beginning of the conference. She was one of the key speakers in the event. I really liked the topic, 'yun kasi pinakatumatak sakin. At saka in line din siya sa topic ko which is artificial intelligence.”

Patrick Villanueva tackled his topic “The Influence of English Translation Methods on high School Students’ Comprehension of Clips and Films”.

He said that he was “surprised” to know that he will also represent the school in WCASET.

“Well, I was shocked to know na isasali ako doon (WCASET) kasi nga ang puno’t dulo ng research ko eh about anime. Yung topic ko dubbing vs. subbing, eh syempre di ko ine-expect na mapupunta ako dun. Thank you anime hahaha.” remarked Patrick.

“Of course it was overwhelming. Nandun yung researches na may prediction ng college dropouts and may isa pa nga galing ibang bansa na gumawa ng sariling method. Napaka revolutionary ng mga ideas. But at the end of the day, I was happy to present in the event.” he continued.

His special moment from the event was when one professor approached him to talk about his topic.

“Nagulat ako na may lumapit sakin during the break. He talked about how he did not expect a student to tackle the topic kasi sabi niya eh one of his colleagues or former classmate ata ‘yon? Eh halos kaparehas daw ng topic ko. He was surprised to know na student lang daw yung gumawa ng research na ‘yon (Patrick's research). It was encouraging to be honest.” he uttered.

Lastly, Marielle Elumba discussed the research titled “Franchising Business in the Philippines Setting: Case Analysis”

It was a group research with members; John Carlo Garcia, Wendee Francisco, Junie Padaca Jr.

She mentioned that she was startled to know that she will be presenting their research at the conference.

“Well syempre at first super natakot ako. Ilang days nalang kasi tsaka sinabi na ako na daw yung mag ppresent, hindi naman kasi ako yung unang napili as presenter. Hindi rin ako prepared and mas kinabahan ako sa thought na haharap ako para mag present sa ibang tao. But at the same time, naexcite din ako kasi inisip ko na magandang opportunity rin yun for me kaya I said yes na rin.” Marielle replied.

“I was kinda shocked when I realized na puro pala professionals mga kasama namin. I was excited and nervous at the same time. But, I just told myself na “okay, there’s no turning back. Kaya ko to. Hindi naman ako isasama dito kung hindi”. So when the moment came and my name was called, huminga lang ako nang malalim and yung kaba is nawala na. Nag present ako di lang for myself but also for the people who helped me to do and finish that research and of course for those people who believed in me.” she responded.

She treasured the whole experience she had from the event.

“The whole experience was very memorable for me and I think malaki yung matutulong nun for me, especially on how I see and appreciate things.” she mentioned

Ma'am Arabelle Baquiller, one of the research mentors, spoke about why the school decided to include students in WCASET.

“To inculcate to the student that we have research culture in our school and doing research is not difficult or burden but instead it's fun. Because you are not only sharpening your writing skills but also oral communication develops also.” declared Arabelle.

“We are starting our presentation in our school with the help of faculty. We are all collaborating to make excellent research that could present at national and international level,” she answered.

Teacher Arabelle also shared her experience with the students who joined WCASET

”We are so proud and happy to all student taking on the challenge in presenting their research because you are not only representing the school but you also showed that research is fun in our school and with that, you made us the first and the best in terms of research” she stated.
