Possibility of Esports college degree in Philippines, 80% done according to Tier One Entertainment

Tier One Entertainment, South East Asian’s first esports talent agency, collaborated with Lyceum of the Philippines University (LPU) to possibly include esports in their college curriculum this 2020.

The gaming agency’s Facebook page announced that the course development of Bachelor of Science in Esports was already at “80%” and now only waiting to send their draft to Commission on Higher Education (CHED) on March 4.

It would be a 4-year course and students could pursue any of the two tracks; Esports Management and Game design.

Tier One’s CEO Tryke “TryQ” Gutierrez clarified that this would not be the same with the University of Visayas’ esports program.

“No. Kasi ito talaga full-on esports course talaga siya tapos may dalawang tracks siya; Game Design and Esports Management,” he added.

He also remarked in his live stream Q&A that this would become the first in Asia to offer a full-on course.

“Actually we are going to be the first in Asia na full-on course talaga. Kasi meron sa Singapore pero kasi Singapore di pa siya full-on course parang certificate pa lang siya or something” said Tryke Gutierrez in his Q&A live stream.

He mentioned that the course would be only available in LPU as of now.

“Well, for now, sa Lyceum pa lang siya available kasi si Lyceum yung unang magri-risk dito eh” Tryke noted

He also responded to questions regarding the tuition fee of the course.

“Siguro look into tuition fees ng LPU kasi comparable naman yun for sure eh.” he answered

He was asked in the comment section if it would be available in LPU Laguna and he responded that he wasn’t yet sure if it would be possible to extend.

“Ang alam ko talaga is sa [LPU] Manila pa lang siya magstart. Yun yung first talaga na magte-test. Kasi hindi rin enough yung faculty members if ie-extend siya up to Laguna, for now.” TryQ replied

When asked about the development of the course application, he said that they were only waiting for CHED’s approval to fully implement the program.

If everything goes well, this would be a huge breakthrough for the Esports industry, not only in the Philippines but also in Asia.

This might be the first step for the Philippines’ Esports industry to remove the stigma revolving around being passionate about gaming.

Tryke Gutierrez stated that this could be one step to fight off the stigma of the industry but its community should work on it as well.

“Alam niyo para ma fight talaga ung stigma ng gaming and esports, kailangan talaga tayo mismong mga gamers maging magandang ambassador tayo of the industry” he commented.

“To the future students of Bachelor of Science in Esports, show our society that gaming is not a waste of time. It’s not going to be just about fun and games. It takes more than passion: You need hardwork, sacrifice, skills, professionalism, and more.” - Tryke “TryQ” Gutierrez in Tier One Entertainment Facebook page.

Tier One Entertainment was founded by Esports expert Tryke "TryQ" Gutierrez and Cosplayer and Gamer celebrity Alodia Gosiengfiao in 2017.
